AXA League: Piper helps to call tune

Warwicks (128-6) bt Worcs (127) by 4 wkts

WARWICKSHIRE formerly closed one era with an emotional presentation to retiring batsman Andy Moles and moved towards another with their second trouncing of Worcestershire in five days.

Their qualification for the First Division of the new National League next year was almost certainly secured when Worcestershire, after bursting out of the blocks with 43 in seven overs, lost all 10 wickets for a further 84.

Tim Munton halted the run-a-ball start, Vikram Solanki departing to the first of four victims for Keith Piper, and the side's senior statesman, Gladstone Small, recalled the vintage years with three wickets.

Philip Weston's was the one give-away, flailing to long-off as much in frustration as in hope after the dismissal of five partners while he made 34 in 62 balls. Otherwise the innings lacked conviction.

Worcestershire's bowling was a good deal more effective, a missed slip chance denying debutant Duncan Catterall a first wicket before Stuart Lampitt numbered Brian Lara among his three wickets for 16. Dougie Brown and Trevor Penney corrected that situation, only for Bobby Chapman to strike in successive balls.

Warwickshire eventually crossed the line with 9.1 overs in hand after a day of tributes to loyal servants. Moles received a silver salver prior to taking up a coaching contract with South African champions Free State and a Sunday crowd of at least 8,000 supported Munton's benefit match.
