THE wires were buzzing last month when the name A R Butcher appeared on the Surrey team sheet. Imagine, therefore, the consternation when 'C G Greenidge' was on the list yesterday.
However, while Alan Butcher did come out of retirement to play against Derbyshire, the former Hampshire and West Indies batsman was not about to make a dramatic reappearance.
In this instance the initials stood for Carl Gary, rather than Cuthbert Gordon, and the son of the great opening batsman was down as number 11, but he was not needed by a Surrey side recording only their second win in the competition this season.
Their total looked inadequate, but a steady fall of wickets in the Kent reply rendered even that modest total as unattainable. Surrey relied heavily on a seventh-wicket partnership of 50 between Jonathan Batty and Adam Hollioake.
Greenidge opened the bowling but, while he reached a lively pace on a distinctly bowler friendly pitch, it was Hollioake who took the honours. The captain claimed the prize wicket of Carl Hooper with an absolute beauty, cutting away to take off stump.
