Cambridge University v Glamorgan

Reports from the Electronic Telegraph

13-15 May 1998

Day 1: Evans hits new high

By Edward Bevan

Cambridge Univ (13-0) trail Glamorgan (342-4 dec) by 329 runs

ALUN EVANS, a compact well-organised opening batsman, struck a career-best 125 yesterday and showed why he was so highly rated by Clive Radley, who coached him on the Lord's groundstaff.

Evans and Adrian Shaw (71) tucked into an ordinary attack with an opening partnership of 158 and Adrian Dale (58) also made the most of a good pitch before the county champions declared.

Day 3: Parkin has students in disarray

By Edward Bevan at Fenner's

Glamorgan (342-4 dec & 220-4 dec) bt Cambridge Univ (270-5 dec & 121) by 171 runs

OWEN PARKIN soon dispelled any thoughts Cambridge University might have had of scoring 293 in four hours when he captured wickets in his first, third and fifth overs to leave the students in disarray at 12 for three.

After failing to take a wicket in the first innings, Parkin observed the virtue of bowling a full length, which induced James Pyemont and Quentin Hughes to edge catches to slip and gully.

The students' inept performance on a good pitch was in contrast to their first innings when three batsmen passed fifty and they must have been disappointed in not holding out for a draw.

Ed Smith and Will House avoided further disasters against the new ball but both fell in quick succession to Dean Cosker, who obtained minimal turn but deceived the batsmen with his flight and variation.

Cosker can expect plenty of bowling this season with Robert Croft likely to miss nearly half of the county fixtures due to Test and one-day international commitments.

Glamorgan will therefore rely on their pace attack, but if Waqar Younis and Steve Watkin suffer injury they have capable understudies in Parkin, Simon Jones and Gary Butcher, who took the last four wickets in eight overs. The university, who slumped to 95 for six at tea, offered little resistance thereafter.
