Burki lays down law

MATCH referee Javed Burki will today lay down the law to captains and coaches of both sides on the issue of dissent on the eve of the third Cornhill England-South Africa Test.

Burki fined England batsman Mark Ramprakash £850 - 25 per cent of his match fee - for disputing a decision when given out by Australian umpire Darrell Hair during the second Test, at Lord's. Ramprakash then made remarks to Hair as he walked off, which were held to be offensive.

In the same game South Africa's Allan Donald showed his frustration when an appeal was turned down and England captain Alec Stewart appeared to be silently debating the correctness of his dismissal.

Neither Donald nor Stewart were spoken to by Burki at the time, but the referee later called in representatives of both sides and told them of his disappointment at some of the behaviour.

Darren Gough, who broke a finger while batting in the first Edgbaston Test, had a brief bowling spell at Old Trafford yesterday inbetween the rain showers.

Until this weekend, when he came through his outing against Cambridge University without trouble, he had not bowled in first-class cricket since May 16.
