Players must earn applause

ALEC STEWART told his players ``a few home truths'' before the start of play yesterday and later said of his side's dismal performance on Saturday ``for an England captain that just wasn't good enough.''

The England captain upheld the right of spectators to jeer the side. ``When we walked off today they cheered us; when we walked off Saturday they booed us. If they are cheering us at the end of the game I'll be happy. Today has been good, but it's tomorrow that counts.''

``The crowd are entitled to have their opinion. In cricket or football if the home side doesn't perform they're entitled to say what they want. I would like to think that in future - with bat and ball - we'll play better than we have in this game, today apart.''

Stewart praised Michael Atherton's ``magnificent innings'' and added that if the former captain could repeat his Wanderers innings three winters ago, when he batted 10 hours to save the Test in Johannesburg, ``I'll be more than happy.''

``When we restart, the first hour will be vital. The ball is brand new and Allan Donald is the best new-ball bowler in the world. There's still a lot of hard work to do.''

Stewart said that Graham Thorpe was ``struggling'' with his back ailment. ``He has had it for six months and this is the worst it has been for him. But in an emergency we will wheel him out.''

South Africa's Lance Klusener last night went for an X-ray on an injured foot. His coach, Bob Woolmer, said: ``He can't put his left foot down properly when bowling, but we don't know what the problem is.''
