2nd Final: Canterbury v Auckland at Christchurch, 6 Feb 2000

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to start at 11am local time (2200 GMT)

Welcome to Jade Stadium for the second Shell Cup final between
Canterbury and Auckland on a rather overcast morning in
Christchurch, though the forecast is for a maximum of 27 degrees
        later today
the wicket is looking rather patchy with many grassy areas,
probably clippings rolled into the pitch, but it should play OK,
despite not looking a contestant for the Miss Pitch Universe
        competition
Auckland captain Blair Pocock has won the toss and has elected to
bat first, with one change to his side - Andre Adams forced out
through injury, replaced by Chris Drum who missed the first final
        for the same reason
Canterbury have kept the same side that snuck through by two runs
at Auckland, with Chris Martin again on 12th man duties
the players make their way out to the field, Auckland opening with
Aaron Barnes to take first strike and ex-Cantabrian Llorne Howell
at the other end, Chris Cairns to bowl from the Hadlee Stand End
0.1 Anderson to Howell, one run, clipped through midwicket, underway
        immediately
0.1 Cairns to Barnes, one run, clipped through midwicket, underway
        immediately
0.2 Cairns to Howell, no run, left alone outside off stump through to
        Hopkins
it's been an incredibly blustery morning, it could be rather
difficult to bowl in for quite some time today
0.3 Cairns to Howell, no run, beaten! played inside the line in defence
        and done
0.4 Cairns to Howell, no run, short of a length straight ball, angled
        away in defence to gully
0.5 Cairns to Howell, one run, nudged into the covers, quick run taken
0.6 Cairns to Barnes, no run, left alone outside off stump

End of over 1 (2 runs) Auckland 2/0 (RR: 2.00)

1.2 Wisneski to Howell, no run, defends on the leg side again
1.3 Wisneski to Howell, legbye: one run, struck on the pad, balloons
away square on the leg side, Barnes calls Howell through for a
        quickish run

        side
2.4 Cairns to Howell, FOUR, short ball, Howell jabs it away in the air,
past the spectacularly leaping McMillan at gully, it races across
the outfield beating the dive of Doody at third man
2.5 Cairns to Howell, no run, defends away to gully
2.6 Cairns to Howell, no run, dabs it away to point

AC Barnes 1* (5b) LG Howell 5* (13b 1x4)

3.1 Wisneski to Barnes, one run, shortish ball down leg, turned towards
short fine leg for an easy run
3.2 Wisneski to Howell, no run, the wind picks it up, a bit of early
swing as it's left alone outside off, picks up speed as it passes
through, almost impaling keeper Hopkins who drops it as he tries
        to take chest high
3.3 Wisneski to Howell, OUT: Howell falls for a mini-trap, Cairns
planted at short fine leg, Wisneski drops a shorter one in down
leg, really a rank poor ball that deserved to be punished, but he
just flicked it off the hip straight to him

       Lou Vincent the new batsman
3.4 Wisneski to Vincent, wide: no run, leaves alone outside off, very
        wide and swinging away
3.4 Wisneski to Vincent, no run, beaten pushing forward at one outside
off moving away slightly, this wind is playing havoc with the
        bowlers and batsmen alike
3.5 Wisneski to Vincent, no run, Cairns' hat and sunglasses fly off his
head at short fine leg towards the boundary as Wisneski runs it,
but it doesn't stop the bowler, good line delivery defended into
        the covers
3.6 Wisneski to Vincent, no run, beaten outside off, withdrew inside
        the line late

hammers it on the up through the covers
7.2 Wisneski to Vincent, one run, turned away towards Anderson at deep

7.4 Wisneski to Barnes, no run, defends into the covers
7.5 Wisneski to Barnes, no run, driven straight up to mid on
7.6 Wisneski to Barnes, one run, driving, thick edge flies wide of
second slip, down to Burson who makes an excellent dart around at
third man, slides into it and returns it straight over the stumps

Stead at mid off, half looks for a run that isn't on
8.2 Cairns to Barnes, two runs, strays down leg, neatly clipped away

8.3 Cairns to Barnes, no run, shortish ball on off stump, defends down
        into the covers
8.4 Cairns to Barnes, two runs, partly controlled thick edge flies over

8.5 Cairns to Barnes, no run, straight ball on off stump, stroked
firmly off the back foot up to straight mid off
8.6 Cairns to Barnes, one run, shortish ball outside off forced off the

        across to his left

End of over 9 (5 runs) Auckland 31/1 (RR: 3.44)
CL Cairns 5-0-19-0 - Hadlee Stand End
AC Barnes 10* (21b) L Vincent 13* (19b 2x4)

9.1 Wisneski to Barnes, no run, widish ball down the leg side, shuffled
across towards off, tried to catch up with it but misses
9.2 Wisneski to Barnes, no run, driven up to Stead at mid off
9.3 Wisneski to Barnes, one run, pushed up towards mid on off the back
foot, quick run well taken with the shot
9.4 Wisneski to Vincent, one run, similar again, this time towards mid
        off
9.5 Wisneski to Barnes, FOUR, great shot, a bit short and sat up, just
picked it up from one leg and pulled through midwicket, no chance
for Anderson at deep square leg as it was hit rather well
9.6 Wisneski to Barnes, no run, leaves a slower ball alone outside off
stump, Hopkins can't take cleanly again as it rebounds out of the
gloves towards second slip, not easy conditions to keep wickets in
        today

10.3 Burson to Vincent, no run, defends down on the leg side
10.4 Burson to Vincent, FOUR, superb! Vincent spotted it early and
viciously pulled it from wide outside off stump through midwicket,
        cracking stuff
10.5 Burson to Vincent, one run, another similar type of slap shot, this
time up towards mid off, sets off for a very quick run except that
he hit it too well to Stead, the throw at the bowler's end misses
as he dives in, could've been in trouble otherwise
10.6 Burson to Barnes, no run, stroked into the covers

        to mid on
11.6 Wisneski to Barnes, FOUR, stroked in the air wide of Cairns

big shot over the top, but slices it high down to Doody at third
man, Vincent's gamble doesn't come off and his aggressive innings

14.4 Burson to Barnes, no run, misses trying to cut away a marginally
slower ball outside off stump, good change of pace by Burson
14.5 Burson to Barnes, FOUR, overpitched and punished, strong drive
straight down the ground, too good for Cairns at mid on
14.6 Burson to Barnes, no run, defends in close on the off side

15.2 Astle to Aiken, one run, nudged away towards Anderson at deep cover

15.5 Astle to Barnes, one run, stroked away to deep cover point
15.6 Astle to Aiken, no run, dabbed away in close towards Harris racing
in from cover point, it was always a hesitant single and Barnes
was really struggling to get through, the throw misses direct but

23.1 Astle to Canning, no run, technically dropped! thick edge from
Canning trying to run a very straight ball down to third man, very
difficult to take for Hopkins, straight in and out, bad enough he
has to contend with the wind behind the stumps
23.2 Astle to Canning, FOUR, cracking straight drive down the ground,
and Canning registers his highest televised Shell Cup score after
        a previous dreadful run of 0, 0, 2 and 8 (after averaging 46 prior

the back foot up towards Adams at mid off, who makes a clanger of
an effort to miss it, through him for a couple, not having a good
        day as a reserve fielder
22.2 Drum to Fleming, SIX, rising ball, Fleming takes Drum on with a
"take that!" shot, hoisted very, very high over square leg, just
over the rope by a couple of metres, Canterbury turning it on for
        the crowd now
22.3 Drum to Fleming, two runs, played through the covers, not a lot of
timing in it however, beats Adams' despairing dive at wide mid off
        for a couple more
22.4 Drum to Fleming, (noball) FOUR, oversteps, adding to the punishment
already dealt out, Drum serving it up on a platter, flayed through
the big gap in the covers, 19 from the last 4 legitimate balls
just when Auckland thought they had wedged open some sort of
crevasse in the Canterbury batting line up, Fleming plays dentist
and fills it in and then adds some more for good measure

to perfection, mid on is too wide and it beats Drum's outstretched

23.4 Walker to Astle, FOUR, laps it very fine, Drum does well to get
after it, but can't quite pull it back inside the rope as he

you please, and Canterbury are the 1999-2000 Shell Cup champions,
defeating Auckland by 7 wickets with 49 deliveries to spare
a dominate Canterbury side do it again, with too much finals
experience, taking it 2-0 and the third final on Tuesday won't be

Canterbury defend the title they won last year, and make it their
7th Shell Cup success in the last 9 seasons, truly the team of the
        '90s
Despite Nash's best efforts with the bat today, he failed to gain
enough support besides that from Canning in their recovery century
stand for the 5th wicket, the home side, with Astle and Fleming
proving irresistable forces, cantered home with little worry
        whatsoever
the 7 Cup successes going alongside 3 in the Shell Trophy (first-
class) and a Shell Super Max League victory last year to round off
the decade (unless they can add the forthcoming Shell Trophy to
        the list also)
time for the presentations, Warren Wisneski is named Man of the
Finals Series, Gary Stead holds aloft the Shell Cup, the second
time he's had the honour as Canterbury captain, and now the
players go forth to receive their respective winners and losers
        medals
that wraps things up from here at Jade Stadium, on what started an
incredibly blustery, dark morning and ends up bathed in sunshine,
in front of a fairly disappointing crowd of no larger than 3000
people, when 8000 was predicted, but at least that's about a 500%
increase on the pitiful Auckland turnout in the first final
join us for the next round of New Zealand coverage when the England
Women's tour of New Zealand and Shell Trophy both begin in the
next week, until then it's good evening from CricInfo at the home
of the victorious Shell Cup champions, again, Christchurch
