Vigne Cup Matches By Clive Ruffell - 19 March 2000
As was the case last week, only one Vigne Cup match was possible this week due to waterlogged grounds, in a disappointing end to the season. Harare Sports Club v Old Hararians In a match of no consequence to the final log standings, HSC ended their season in disappointing fashion as they went down to the National League champions in the final round of the Vigne Cup competition on Sunday. With the Alexandra v Old Georgians match abandoned due to unsuitable playing conditions at Groombridge, the five points awarded each team ensured Alex the title. At Harare Sports Club, two of the HSC regulars failed to arrive for the match, reducing their side to nine players. Already hit by call-ups to the national squad and the Logan Cup sides, Sports Club were unlikely to be competitive with this additional blow, especially against the powerful OH outfit. Batting first, HSC started slowly but steadily with runs from Davies, Oldrieve and Swannell at the top of the order. But the inexperienced middle order were not able to contribute, and with missing players could only muster 92 runs off 32 overs, with Rinkie returning the outstanding figures of 5/7. It wasn't all plain sailing for OH in reply as Williams ripped out the top order. But Simms and Delport went on the offensive in the middle order to steer OH within sight of victory. There was a flurry of wickets near then as HSC captain for the day, Gavin Johnston-Robertson claimed two wickets in one over with his slow off spin. But it was too little too late for HSC and OH recorded a five wicket victory with 36 overs to spare. It was the final league match for the 54 year old Johnston-Robertson who has decided to hang up his boots and concentrate on his business commitments, but will continue to be involved in cricket as an umpire. The Vigne Cup was won by Alexandra Sports Club who ended the tournament with 7 wins from 10 matches to complete a satisfactory season after finishing second in the national league. OH finished in second place on the log. The Vigne cup second league was won by Alexandra 2nd team thanks to a superior run rate over Universals 2nd XI, whilst the third league was won by Old Georgians 2nd team.
