The fifth round of the Mashonaland club competition, the Vigne Cup, was played in Harare while the national players tried in vain to evade the rain in Bulawayo.

At Universals Sports Club. UNIVERSALS 263/9 (50 overs) (K Adam 76, H J Hira 47, D D Ebrahim 36; R Manyande 4/57, A Maungwa 2/41, H Masakadze 2/46). WINSTONIANS 177 (46.1 overs) (S Matsikanyere 56, S Chideya 36, N Manyande 29; D T Mutendera 4/23). Universals won by 86 runs.

The battle between the two top teams resulted in a victory for Old Georgians, thanks mainly to a brilliant century from Craig Wishart, who reminded the selectors loud and clear that he has recovered from his knee injury and is keen to regain his place in the national team. Alexandra still head the table, though, with a higher consolidated run rate, due to the postponement of the match between Old Georgians and Old Hararians early in the season.

Old Hararians pulled ahead of Harare Sports Club with their victory at home, with left-arm spinner Ray Price contributing a determined fifty, a reminder that he used to be more of a batsman who can bowl.

Universals finally posted their first victory of the tournament with a good team effort to beat Winstonians, again without Andy Flower who was playing in the Test match.
