Old Hararians vs Alexandra Sports Club -National First League Final
John Ward - 27 February 2000

As expected, favourites Old Hararians won the National First League with a convincing six wicket win over Alexandra Sports Club in the final of the competition, at Harare Sports Club. The match itself failed to live up to expectation with only 253 runs scored off 90 overs, a run rate of only 2.8 runs per over, a disappointing climax to the competition.

The outfield was slow following the recent heavy rains, and after winning the toss, OH skipper Trevor Penney had no hesitation in asking Alex to bat under heavily overcast conditions.

The OH seamers once again settled quickly onto an immaculate line and length, as they have done all season, making run scoring very difficult for the Alex batsmen. The Alex innings was centered around a half-century from Murray Goodwin who played his natural attacking game. Gavin Rennie and Andy Blignaut gave Goodwin some support, but none of the top order managed to bat through the innings. The surprise star bowling performance came from Dirk Viljoen who accounted Goodwin with his second ball, brilliantly caught by Penney in the covers. Viljoen ripped through the Alex middle and lower order, finishing with the astonishing figures of 9.5-4-15-6. Paul Strang made a tentative return to cricket after a lengthy injury layoff, but was punished by Goodwin in his two overs. Gary Brent was also fairly expensive, conceding 22 off his 4 overs, but the rest of the OH bowlers were extremely miserly. In all, eight bowlers were used, highlighting the depth in all round ability in the OH side.

Despite a more than useful Alex bowling attack, the target of 127 was never likely to be enough against the powerful OH batting. After losing opener Eddo Brandes early on, the OH batsmen decided that caution was the name of the game and batted with care as they crawled towards deserved victory with Raymond Price playing the anchor role with 43. Kevin Duers was the most impressive bowler for Alex with 1/27 off 10 overs.

The title is just reward to OH who have played consistently well the whole season to remain undefeated.
