ZIMBABWE NATIONAL LEAGUE CLUB CRICKET: ROUND 4 John Ward - 5 October 1999 Results of 50-over matches played on Sunday 3 October. The Vigne Cup is the Mashonaland clubs league competition. At Old Georgians Sports Club. HARARE SPORTS CLUB 192/8 (50 overs) (D J Peacock 27, J Jameson 50, A P Hoffman 35*; A J Mackay 2/34, B D McCoun 3/42, G W Flower 3/33). OLD GEORGIANS 193/3 (44.3 overs) (G W Flower 80*, A J Erasmus 34, T Friend 29; K J Davies 2/55). Old Georgians won by seven wickets. The all-round skills and in particular the determined batting of Grant Flower decided this match. Sports Club lost early wickets and had to fight back through a determined partnership between Dan Peacock and John Jameson, who had to use a runner after being hit on the thigh. Thereafter only Anton Hoffman offered much as Flower restrained and worked his way through the later batsmen.Flower began with great caution, taking 16 balls to get off the mark, and had at one stage just 22 off 70 balls. Then he began to open out, and his entire innings came off 121 balls as he led Old Georgians to a fine victory. At Universals Sports Club. UNIVERSALS 236 (49.5 overs) (E Z Matambanadzo 52, D D Ebrahim 42, D R Matambanadzo 54, A Meman 23; A M Blignaut 3/37, M W Goodwin 2/48). ALEX 239/1 (40 overs) (G J Rennie 112*, D A Marillier 65, M W Goodwin 38*). Alex won by nine wickets. Grant Flower's Test opening partner Gavin Rennie played a similar role for Alex, hitting a superb unbeaten century to give his team an unexpectedly easy victory, albeit on a lifeless pitch. Rennie hit 17 fours and a six, taking the match away from Universals with defensive help from Doug Marillier in an opening stand of 194, before Goodwin finished off the match with some powerful hitting. Earlier Everton Matambanadzo, captaining Universals, opened the batting and astounded the cricket world by recording a fifty! He and Dion Ebrahim put on 95 for the first wicket. However Everton's twin brother Darlington, more of a batsman who bowls, was not to be outdone and made sure he exceeded Everton's score. At Old Hararians Sports Club. OLD HARARIANS 235/9 (50 overs) (R W Price 23, D P Viljoen 21, G Lamb 55; R Brayende 2/65, W R Chawaguta 2/35). WINSTONIANS 223 (49.4 overs) (F Makunura 35, T Tauibu 26, A Flower 87, S Matsikenyere 23; B C Strang 2/34, G B Brent 4/49, R W Price 2/46). Old Hararians won by 12 runs. Winstonians put up a most creditable performance on their debut in the first league. They have been bolstered since last season by Andy Flower, who played a leading part in this match but it was by no means a one-man show. The promising Academy student Greg Lamb was the leading batsman for the home side, while Flower received good support from his colleagues and the match was always in the balance until he was dismissed. Gary Brent, although expensive, bowled well for Old Hararians.
