ZIMBABWE NATIONAL LEAGUE CLUB CRICKET: ROUND 1 Report from John Ward - 13 September 1999 Results of 50-over matches played on Sunday 12 September. At Harare Sports Club. QUEENS SPORTS CLUB 194/7 (J R Craig 26, N R van Rensburg 39, J A Rennie 45, H R Olonga 49*; B T Watambwa 2/31, D J Peacock 2/33). HARARE SPORTS CLUB 199/1 (M A Vermeulen 84*, S V Carlisle 92*). Harare Sports Club won by nine wickets. The early Queens batsmen appeared rather rusty, and even John Rennie struggled to time the ball. The innings was given a boost by some powerful hitting by Henry Olonga, batting unusually high at number six; he hit five big sixes but no fours. There was some very poor fielding by Harare Sports Club, who dropped at least five catches. Trevor Gripper (14) and Vermeulen opened solidly for Sports Club, while the Queens bowling attack, lacking Streak who played as a batsman after his knee operation, was rather inaccurate. Stuart Carlisle played a fine innings, with sound back-up from Mark Vermeulen. The pair added an unbeaten 151 for the second wicket. At Universals Sports Club. OLD GEORGIANS 143 (49.5 overs) (G W Flower 28, T Friend 31, A J Mackay 28; E Z Matambanadzo 4/20, A H Omarshah 2/17, A D R Campbell 2/25). UNIVERSALS 145/5 (28.3 overs) (T N Madondo 75, H J Hira 20; D J Rowett 3/30). Universals won by five wickets. The most notable feature of the match was a brilliant innings by Test batsman Trevor Madondo, who hit 75 off only 54 balls, with a six and 13 fours. His fifty came up off only 36 balls. At Mutare Sports Club. MANICALAND 208 (49.5 overs) (M G Burmester 32, R K Barbour 28, G J Whittall 32, D Yatras 34; A M Blignaut 2/29, A Manoussis 2/43, G J Rennie 2/42). ALEXANDRA 209/5 (G J Rennie 25, A M Blignaut 94*, A Manoussis 21*; M G Burmester 2/15, S Lawton 2/32). Alexandra won by five wickets. Manicaland got off to a flying start, reaching 77 for one off their first 15 overs, but a middle-order collapse saw the score sink to 160 for seven before Deon Yatras played a calm innings. Andy Blignaut enhanced his claims for all-rounder status with an intelligent innings which contained 13 fours but was more notable for the skilful way he worked the ball around the field to compile his runs. At Mac Club, Bulawayo. MAC CLUB v OLD HARARIANS postponed. The match between the league champions and the newly promoted Mac Club of Bulawayo was postponed at short notice when the hosts claimed that due to the industrial catering strike they had nothing prepared for the match. Old Hararians chairman Russell Tiffin said he found this very disappointing and unprofessional.
