The Electronic Telegraph Hampshire 2nd XI v Durham 2nd XI, Semi Final
Christopher Lyles - 16 August 1999

Hampshire in final after wash-out

Hampshire progressed to the final of the Aon Trophy by virtue of having won more zonal qualifying matches than Durham after a storm limited their semi-final to just 22.1 overs yesterday morning. They will play Kent or Warwickshire, who meet at Canterbury today.

In the play that was possible, Lee Savident and Jason Laney gave Hampshire a flying start with a partnership of 53 in 12 overs before Ryan Robinson, a product of Yorkshire's cricket academy, exploited some early moisture in the pitch to breach the defences of both openers.

But Durham were powerless to prevent their opponents' advance after the weather intervened.

Their team included three players from their own academy, including batsman Nicky Peng, 16, who has scored more than 2,000 runs in all cricket this summer. He is the ideal player for a competition that began in 1986 to encourage the development of younger players who are eligible to play for England.

In addition, the rules stipulate that a team may play no more than three capped players, nor more than three over 25, and any participants in the latter stages must have played in at least two of the zonal matches.

AON TROPHY.- Semi-final: Hampshire 2nd XI 90-2 (22.1 overs) v Durham 2nd XI. Match abandoned (rain).
