DID U KNOW...

Against which team did Sunil Gavaskar score his 7,000th run? (07 November 2001)

Sachin Tendulkar, in the recently concluded Bloemfontein Test, became only the second Indian to cross the 7,000-run milestone, the first, of course, being the original Little Master. Sunil Manohar Gavaskar, achieved the feat in the first Test of a six-match series against Pakistan in 1982/83. The Test was drawn, but it featured some brilliant batting performances, including a majestic 215 from Zaheer Abbas, his hundredth first-class ton, and centuries from Mohinder Amarnath and Mohsin Khan. Pakistan, batting first, piled up a mammoth 485, albeit taking two days to do so.

When India batted, Gavaskar, along with J Arun Lal, gave his team a solid start, putting on 105 runs for the first wicket. His 81 was vintage Gavaskar; made off 202 balls in 325 minutes, it was full of characteristic dourness and stolidity.

During the course of the knock, Gavaskar became only the fourth batsman to cross 7,000 Test runs. He would, of course, go on to make 3,122 more, making his 10,000th run also against the same opposition at Ahmedabad, finishing with a staggering 34 centuries and a career average of 51. By all appearances, Tendulkar looks sure to top even those stunning statistics.
