A daunting target of 280 off 50 overs was what India set for the South Africans. The left-handed opening batsman Gary Kirsten had other ideas though. He went around knocking runs with such efficiency that bowlers like Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble were made to look ordinary. Kirsten smashed an unbeaten 133 off 155 balls, striking 13 boundaries. He was involved in two crucial partnerships, 114 runs for the first wicket with Gibbs and 93 runs for the second wicket with Kallis. South Africa cruised to victory with four wickets and 10 balls to spare.
