AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2000
The
inaugural Americas Cricket Championships 2000 was held in Toronto, Canada from
August 5-12, 2000 with participating teams from the regions four Associate Members
(Argentina, Bermuda, Canada and the USA) and the region’s leading Affiliate
Member (Cayman Islands). The critical importance of this tournament cannot be
overlooked, as it represented a dress rehearsal for the performances of the
following year’s 2001 ICC Trophy which was hosted in Canada as well, with good
performance from all the teams which participated. All games during this inaugural
competition were played on newly laid turf pitches and this has set the standard
by which all subsequent championships will be judged.
The
tournament was an enjoyable experience for all of the participants, who had
the benefit of enjoying the city of Toronto and its many tourist attractions.
The on the field highlights included, Bermuda’s Charlie Marshall’s 164 in the
first game, and the rarity of three brothers on the same team (Wight brothers
representing the Cayman Islands), and the one run victory of the USA over the
Caymans. The Table below illustrates the final points standings:
