Postcard from Singapore
Hong Kong's highly
promising Under-13 team duly completed their second successive victory
a matter of one hour ago. Today a plucky, extremely enthusiastic but rather
inexperienced Thailand side were bowled out for 60 in 29 overs. John Bacon
broke the back of their batting with 4 for 20, with Zaid Janjua and Irfan
Ahmed chipping in with 3 for 4 and 2 for 16 respectively. After a couple
of early wickets, Irfan and Jamie Atkinson brought the team home with
19 not out and 17 not out.
Yesterday Hong Kong
saw off the challenge of Singapore with a highly disciplined batting performance.
They made 224 for 5 before limiting the Singaporeans to 178. The foundation
of Hong Kong's innings was laid by Daniel Fullgrabe (53) and Jamie Atkinson
(44) who put on 101 for the first wicket which fell in only the 11th over.
The captain, Robbie Bacon then anchored the innnings with 33 and there
were useful contributions by John Bacon and Tom Ingram. Irfan, coming
in at the end of the innings, struck 17 off 8 balls. Singapore put up
some stern resistance but were 46 runs short. John Bacon was the pick
of the bowlers with 3 wickets.
The boys are adapting
well to the hot and humid conditions and we are all hoping their clothes
and especially their underwear is in a reasonable condition for the challenges
ahead!
Tomorrow Malaysia
provide the opposition and hopefully there will be a final to play in
on Sunday. So far, so very good......

Postcard from Singapore
(Part 2)
Victory for Hong Kong's
youngest team was finally achieved as expected yesterday. Malaysia, having
been beaten on Saturday, stiffened the sinews and came out fighting, only
to be beaten back by this thoroughly promising Hong Kong side by the comfortable
margin of 38 runs.
The day began with
heavy rain and thunderstorms justifying the selection of the strongest
team the previous day when Hong Kong defeated Malaysia by only 3 wickets.
For much of Sunday that result looked like being the crucial win of the
tournament. However groundstaff with "Super Soppers" to the
fore managed to get the ground fit and ready by one o'clock, when the
game started amidst drizzle and nervous tension. The game was reduced
to 33 overs a side and once agian Hong Kong were given a kickstart by
Jamie Atkinson (22) and Daniel Fullgrabe (14). The Bacon twins then added
26 for the 3rd wicket and Robbie Bacon again anchored the innings with
45 not out to see the total to respectability at 119 for 8.
The Malaysians were
then blitzed by a combination of Irfan Ahmed's ferocious opening spell
(3 for 18) and some truly excellent ground fielding. Robbie Bacon's steady
inswing bowling resulted in 3 for 13. As Robbie received both the Cup
and the Man of the Match award, the heavens opened, but the win was in
the bag and the mission accomplished.
The day before Malaysia
had made only 89, mesmorised by John Bacon's 5 for 8. Daniel (29) and
Jamie (21) had been supported by John's 16 not out. Hong Kong wobbled
towards the target and Nicky Hawinkels had struck the winning boundary.
It was all made irrelevant
by this thoroughly deserved win. Hong Kong is lucky to have some excellent
young cricketers with supportive families and, not least, undoubtedly
the best coach of boys in South-East Asia. Having looked a class apart
from the rest, only 6 boys from the party of 14 are ineligible to play
next year. The conveyor is definitely on the move.
