      1. Play shall continue on each day until the completion of a minimum number of overs or until the scheduled or re-scheduled cessation time, whichever is the later.

The minimum number of overs to be completed, unless an innings ends or an interruption occurs, shall be:

(i) Preliminary Round, Super Six and Shield Series

(a) on days other than the last day - a minimum of 104 overs (or a minimum of 16 overs per hour).

(b) on the last day - a minimum of 88 overs (or a minimum of 16 overs per hour) for playing time other than the last hour when clause 6.3.6 below shall apply.

6.3.2 ADDITIONAL TIME

(i) When playing time is lost on any day except the last, then as much time as possible shall be made up by continuing play for up to 30 minutes after the scheduled close of play on any day except the last (weather and light permitting) and/or starting play up to 30 minutes before the scheduled starting time on any day provided that a total of not more than 30 minutes is made up on any one day. In these circumstances, the minimum number of overs to be bowled shall be in accordance with the provisions of this clause i.e. a minimum of 16 overs per hour and the cessation time shall be rescheduled accordingly.

On any day’s play, except the last day, when the scheduled hours of play have been completed, but the required number of overs have not been bowled and weather or bad light causes play for that day to be abandoned, the remaining overs on that day shall be made up on the next or subsequent days. On any one day, a maximum of 8 additional overs shall be permitted.

(a) When play starts early or finishes late the scheduled times of the luncheon and tea intervals will not be adjusted, but two drinks breaks may be taken (at the third points) in any session re-arranged to last for 2½ hours or longer.

6.3.3 When an innings ends a minimum number of overs shall be bowled from the start of the new innings. The number of overs to be bowled shall be calculated at the rate of one over for each full 3¾ minutes to enable a minimum of:

(i) 104 Overs Preliminary Round, Super Six and Shield Series

(ii) 96 Overs The Final

to be bowled in a day, and the time for close of play shall be rescheduled accordingly.

The last hour of the match shall be excluded from this calculation when clause 6.3.6 shall apply.

Where a change of innings occurs during a day’s play, in the event of the team bowling second being unable to complete its overs by the scheduled cessation time, play shall continue until the required number of overs have been completed.

Where there is a change of innings during a day’s play (except at lunch or tea or when play is suspended due to unfit ground, weather or light conditions or for exceptional circumstances) 2 overs will be deducted from the minimum number of overs to be bowled.

6.3.4 Except on the last day of the match, if play is suspended due to adverse weather or light for more than 30 minutes in aggregate, the minimum number of overs shall be reduced by one over for each full 3¾ minutes of the aggregate playing time lost. If play on the last day of the match is suspended due to adverse weather or light, the minimum number of overs shall be reduced by one over for each full 3¾ minutes of playing time lost.

      1. On the last day, if any of the minimum of:

(i) 88 Overs Preliminary Round, Super Six and Shield Series

(ii) 80 Overs The Final

or as recalculated, have not been bowled when one hour of scheduled playing time remains, the last hour of the match for the purposes of clause 6.3.6 shall be the hour immediately following the completion of those overs.

6.3.6 Law 16.6, 16.7 and 16.8 will apply except that a minimum of 16 overs shall be bowled in the last hour and all calculations with regard to suspensions of play or the start of a new innings shall be based on one over for each full 3¾ minutes (refer clause 6.3.10 below). If, however, at the commencement of the last hour of the match, both captains (the batsmen at the wicket may act for their Captain) accept that there is no prospect of a result to the match, they may agree to cease play at that time.

6.3.7 Notwithstanding any other provision, there shall be no further play on any day, other than the last day, if a wicket falls or a batsman retires or if the players have occasion to leave the field during the last minimum over within 2 minutes of the scheduled or re-scheduled cessation time or thereafter.

6.3.8 An over completed on resumption of a new day’s play shall be disregarded in calculating minimum overs for that day.

6.3.9 Except on the final day, if in the event of ground, weather or light conditions causing a suspension of play and/or if the players are already off the field at the re-scheduled cessation time or any time thereafter, stumps shall be drawn.

6.3.10 Fractions are to be ignored in all calculations re the number of overs except where there is a change of innings in a day’s play, when the over in progress at the conclusion shall be rounded up.

6.3.11 The scoreboard shall show:

    • the total number of overs bowled with the ball currently in use: and

    • the minimum number of overs remaining to be bowled in a day.

6.3.12 Penalties shall apply for slow over-rates (refer clause 4).

6.4 EXTRA TIME

6.4.1 The Umpires may decide to play 30 minutes (a minimum of eight overs) extra time at the end of any day other than the last day if requested by either Captain if, in the umpires opinion, it would bring about a definite result on that day (this is in addition to the maximum of 30 minutes additional time provided for in clause 6.3.2 above). If the umpires do not believe a result can be achieved, no extra time shall be allowed.

6.4.2 If it is decided to play such extra time on one or more of these days, the whole period shall be played out even though the possibility of finishing the match may have disappeared before the full period has expired.

6.4.3 Only the actual amount of playing time up to the maximum of 30 minutes extra time by which play is extended on any day shall be deducted from the total number of hours of play remaining, and the match shall end earlier on the final day by the amount of time by which play was previously extended under this clause.

6.5.2 MINIMUM OVERS IN THE DAY

    1. 6.5.3 EXTRA TIME

(i) The request by either Captain to play 30 minutes (a minimum of 8 overs) extra time at the end of any day other than the last day, shall not in any way influence the 30 minute restriction period referred to in clause 6.5.1 above with respect to extending the scheduled or rescheduled cessation time.

6.5.4 FITNESS OF GROUND, WEATHER OR LIGHT

(i) Law 3.8 shall apply except that in the event of natural light having deteriorated before the stipulated 30 minutes period on any day, or less in the case of the last day, and the umpires consider that there is a risk of serious physical injury to the batsman, they shall without reference to the batsman instruct the ground authority to switch on the lights.

(ii) In the event of natural light having deteriorated to an unacceptable level after the stipulated 30 minutes period on any day other than the last, the umpires shall establish whether the Captain of the batting team (the batsmen at the wicket may deputise for their Captain) wishes to continue in unfit conditions; if so, his wishes shall be met.

7. TELEVISED REPLAYS

7.1 GENERAL

7.1.1 The Home Province will ensure that a separate room is provided for the television umpire and that he has access to a television monitor and direct sound link with the television control unit director to facilitate as many replays as is necessary to assist him in making a decision.

7.1.2 An on-field umpire wishing the assistance of a television replay shall signal to the television umpire by making the shape of a television screen with his hands.

7.1.3 The on-field umpire has the discretion whether to call for a television replay or not, and should take a common-sense approach. Players may not appeal to the umpire to use the replay system. A breach of this provision would constitute dissent and the player could be liable for disciplinary action under the Rules and Code of Conduct.

7.1.4 The television umpire shall call for as many replays from any camera angle as is necessary to reach a decision. As a guide, a decision should be made within 30 seconds wherever possible, but the television umpire shall have discretion to take more time in order to finalise a decision.

7.1.5 If the television umpire rules that the batsman is out - a red light is displayed, a green light depicts - not out. Should the television umpire be temporarily unable to respond, a white light (where available) will remain illuminated throughout the period of interruption to signify to the on-field umpires that the television replay system is temporarily unavailable, in which case the decision will be taken by the on-field umpire. At centres where a white light is not available, the television umpire will communicate the period of interruption to the on-field umpires by means of a two-way radio transceiver.

7.2 DECISIONS PERMISSIBLE FOR REFERRAL TO THE TELEVISION UMPIRE

The television umpire will officiate in regard to television replays only when the umpires on the field have referred a decision to him in regard to run-out, stumping, caught or hit wicket appeals.

When reviewing the television replay, if the television umpire finds that the batsman has been bowled rather than hit wicket or stumped, he shall communicate the method of dismissal to the on-field umpire by two-way radio.

7.2.1 Caught decisions

(i) Should the bowler’s end umpire be unable to decide whether or not a catch was taken cleanly, he shall first consult with the square-leg umpire.

(ii) Should both umpires be unable to make a decision, the bowler’s end umpire may then call for the television umpire to review a television replay of the catch.

(iii) The television umpire has to determine whether the batsman has been caught, not whether or not he hit the ball.

(iv) The television umpire shall communicate his decision by the red/green light system.

7.2.2 Boundary decisions

(i) The on-field umpire shall be entitled to call for a television replay to assist him in making a decision about whether the fieldsman had any part of his person in contact with the ball when he touched or crossed the boundary line, or whether a four or six had been scored. A decision has to be made immediately and cannot be changed thereafter.

(ii) An on-field umpire wishing the assistance of a television replay shall signal to the television umpire by use of a two-way radio, and the television umpire will convey his decision to the on-field umpire by this method.

(iii) The television umpire may initiate contact with the on-field umpire by two-way radio if TV coverage shows a boundary line infringement.

7.2.3 Batsmen running to the same end

(i) In the event of both batsmen running to the same end and the umpires are uncertain over which batsman made his ground first, the on-field umpire may call for a television replay to assist him in making a decision.

(ii) The procedure in clause 7.1.5 shall apply.

8. LIGHT METERS

8.1 GENERAL

8.1.1 It is the responsibility of the host Province to supply light meters to the umpires appointed to officiate in the match. The following procedure will apply for the use of light meters on the field of play:

    1. Once Law 3.8 has been applied, the umpires will immediately take a reading of the light level.
    2. The reading should be taken from the pitch, pointing the light meter (if the hand held version) at the sightscreens and in any other direction as the umpires see fit.
    3. Once the umpires have agreed upon the reading it should be noted and used as a benchmark reading for the remainder of the stoppage.
    4. Only when the reading has subsequently increased above the benchmark reading should the umpires consider the light level sufficient for play to resume.

9. "HITTING UP"

Teams are required to observe Ground Authority regulations and to exercise the utmost caution when engaging in practice and pre-match warm-up and "hitting-up" activities so as to avoid the risk of injury to members of the public, damage to the centre wicket region and to perimeter fencing.
