Five wicket win for Lancashire League

The Lancashire League beat the Central Lancashire League by 5 wickets in the annual challenge match at Thorneyholme Road Accrington.

Ramsbottom's Lee Daggett was the home sides best bowler. taking 4-10 in 7.5 lively overs on a wicket that gave the bowlers movement early in the afternoon.

Littleborough's Phil Deakin was first to go trapped leg before by Daggett for 3 with the total on 24. Ian Haig blasted David Ormerod for 13 in an over after the Bacup man had caused both openers to play and miss frequently. Haig departed to a fine catch by Colne wicketkeeper David Swarbrick off Daggett for 23. Bobby Cross was next to go with Gary Laycock picking up the first of his three victims again to a catch by team-mate Swarbrick for 10. John Punchard was next to fall to Laycock and then Liam Jackson picked up Jimmy Ryan and John Henderson.

Gary Hunt had Matt Dawson stumped by Swarbrick and Matt Gardner fell to Daggett for 64, the top score of the innings. Dave Norris was trapped leg before by Laycock and Richard Baigent snapped up visiting skipper Lee Wolstenholme off Daggett to leave the visitors 158 all out. Laycock picked up 3-19, Jackson 2-19, Hunt 1-21, Ormerod 0-33 and captain Peter Sleep 0-38.

Andy Clague brought his splendid league form into the match as he and Bacup's Peter Thompson put on 93 for the 3rd wicket until the East Lancs skipper was bowled by Henderson for 55. Thompson went on to make 43 before Lee Wolstenholme got one through his defence. David Brown made a quick 19 which included some splendid on-drives before holeing out to Cross off John Punchard. Peter Sleep and Gary Hunt steered the home side to victory in the 48th over.
