Sri Lanka had a 42 runs first innings lead and had to pay a heavy price for complacency against an Indian pace attack led by Zaheer Khan. They were 116/5 in the 37th over as Zaheer Khan picked up the wickets of Jayasuriya (6), Sangakkara (13), Jayawardene (25) and Russel Arnold (4). Venkatesh Prasad accounted for the wicket of Marvan Atapattu (45) who was looking good for a big score. Prasad snuffed out four more wickets, Suresh Perera (15), Hashan Tillakaratne (16), Vaas (4) and Dilhara Fernando (4) to send Sri Lanka into the depths of despair, 157/9. Zaheer Khan picked up four wickets and Prasad making a comeback had a five-wicket haul to be proud of.
