(Colombo Final ODI - 05 Aug 2001)
Sri Lanka and India met at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday,
in the final of the ODI triangular series for the Coca-Cola Cup.
Sanath Jayasuriya won the toss and elected to bat first on a track
that promised a lot of runs. The Indian pace bowlers erred in line and
length, enabling Jayasuriya and Avishka Gunawardene (34) to knock off
71 runs off just 10.5 overs. Marvan Atapattu (5) tapped an easy catch
to Ganguly off the bowling of Virender Shewag and Sri Lanka were 100/2
in the 16th over. Jayasuriya went on to add 104 runs with Mahela
Jayawardene for the third wicket before being dismissed on 99.
Jayasuriya spooned an easy catch to Ganguly, looking for a hundred; he
had struck eleven cracking boundaries in his glorious knock.
