(Colombo 6th ODI - 28 Jul 2001)
The victory came about in the 46th over when Badani (11*) pinched a
single off the bowling of Arnold. The batting hero of the day was
VVS Laxman. Though the stylist from Hyderabad struggled a bit
with his footwork, he made sure that he stuck around to remain
unbeaten on 87 off 127 balls with the help of 10 strokes past the
ropes. Laxman is carrying a sore right knee, which needs surgery and
that made the match winning effort look greater. He was rightly named
the man of the Match. India opened their account in the tournament but
are still languishing behind Sri Lanka and New Zealand. This morale
boosting victory ensures that India retains a chance of qualifying for
the final.
