Simmons's third hundred in four one-day international innings saw West Indies to their second victory of the weekend, but only after a very tentative start by their batsmen. Haynes was bowled by the first ball of the innings, from Pringle, whose superb opening spell of five overs cost only six runs before an injury prevented him from taking any further part in the match. There were no fewer than nine unsuccessful lbw appeals in the first eight overs. Simmons, missed when 23, needed 103 balls to reach fifty, but only 32 more for his hundred, delighting his home crowd. On a slow, low pitch, the South Africans had been unable to accelerate against accurate bowling after reaching 58 for one from 20 overs.
