Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 06:05 Some news on foreign players in South Africa: West Indian batsman Clayton Lambert had a record-breaking debut for Northern Transvaal over the weekend. In scoring 214 against Transvaal he set up the following records: 1. Highest score on debut in South African first-class cricket for a batsman who has played first-class cricket in another coun- try. 2. Highest score on debut by a Northern Transvaal batsman. 3. Highest score by a Northern Transvaal batsman against Transvaal. 4. His partnership of 308 with Joubert Strydom (109) broke the 67 year-old record for the second wicket partnership in a first- class South African domestic competition. Englishman Philip De Freitas also had a good start to his career in South Africa. Playing for Boland against Western Province, he took 5 wickets in the first innings and then had scores of 21 and 54. His first innings bowling figures were 31-9-80-5. Malcolm Marshall has been appointed vice-captain of Natal. He will stand in for Jonty Rhodes when Rhodes (almost certainly) ac- companies the South African team to India and Australia. Marshall recently scored a century in a club match in Durban and also scored 39 not out against Eastern Province on Saturday. Carlisle Best from the West Indies has joined Western Province. Batting at number 4 against Boland, he scored 24 in the 1st in- nings. West Indian Eldine Baptiste had bowling figures of 37.3-12-83-3 playing for Eastern Province against Natal. Otis Gibson (West Indies) is playing for Border again this sea- son. His first innings bowling figures against Castle Cup cham- pions Orange Free State were 12-1-35-3. He didn't do so well with the bat and scored 0 in the first innings. Yet another West Indian playing in SA is Franklyn Stephenson who is turning out for Orange Free State again.
