England slumped to their seventh successive defeat in a one-day international after apparently being in complete control. Chasing 231, they were 96 without loss and 159 for three. The collapse was partly engineered by the young left-arm fast bowler Julian, who after a rocky start tore through England's middle order, and partly through thoroughly poor batting. Though Gooch made 42, he was sufficiently worried about his form to announce that he would play for the Essex Second XI later in the week for the first time in 19 years. There was some surprise that England, with the series lost, did not give 21-year-old Lathwell an opportunity.

Batting conditions were most difficult early on and Australia, without Border, struggled to put a score together; only Martyn looked in real touch. The day was enlivened by one great one-handed catch – taken by Hayden, leaping backwards in the deep, and worthy of a more distinguished victim than Jarvis– and by the Band of the Coldstream Guards playing Happy Birthday to Denis Compton on his 75th. The great man stood on a balcony and raised a glass, grinning.
