A day and a half into this one-day international, Australia scampered to victory with three balls to spare. Had Pringle's confident lbw appeal against Reiffel been upheld at the start of the over the match would have been tied. Near-Antarctic weather – one television cameraman was taken to hospital with hypothermia – first reduced the game to 45 overs and then forced it into a second day. Border had already chosen to sit it out.

New Zealand were 75 for five after Reiffel took four wickets for three runs, including Jones and Harris with successive balls, but recovered thanks largely to Blain's 41. The bulk of Australia's runs came in a 103-run stand between Mark Waugh and Boon, who became the first Australian to be given out by a third umpire, watching TV. Healy and Dodemaide soon became the second and third. Hilariously, Healy was the subject of run-out appeals at each end off the same ball, both of which were referred. Fortunately, he was out to the first and no ruling was required on the second; no one was sure whether the ball was live or dead.
