From the moment when Atherton so misread the pitch that he chose to field, this was a dire day for England. They bowled appallingly and batted utterly without spirit on the way to their heaviest defeat in any one-day international – another shattering blow to already shaky morale. But, on a blissful day at the Caribbean's most scenic ground, credit was due to West Indies for cricket of imposing superiority. Their batting was often breathtaking, especially that of Lara, who made 60 from 41 balls, and Richardson, whose 52 came from 26 balls in the late acceleration to what was easily a record score by any country in a one-day international against England.

The bowlers then did their simpler job so professionally that, Hick apart, not one England batsman threatened an innings. Atherton, having erroneously dropped himself down the order on the theory that Lewis might make a brisker start, cut a sorry figure, left helpless by the early collapse.
