New Zealand returned to the scene of their triumph in the Third Test for another consolatory win – with nearly 16 overs to spare. Again they owed their success to a partnership between Thomson and an opener – this time Hartland. Pakistan were put in to bat while the pitch had a green tinge, and New Zealand's pace bowlers removed the top four for 19. A total of 145 depended almost entirely on Basit Ali, who hit Cairns over his head for six.

By their 14th over, New Zealand had three batsmen out for a combined score of five. But Hartland, encouraged by an 11,000 crowd on his home ground, anchored the innings, while Thomson played some admirable off-side attacking shots. Wasim Akram's triumphant tour ended on a low note, when he retired mid-over with a bad shoulder.
