Allan Border to coach Australia A team

4 December 1996

BRISBANE, Australia, Tuesday - Former Australian cricket captain Allan Border will make his coaching debut for Australia this month.

The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) on Tuesday appointed Border coach of the Australia A team for limited-over matches against West Indies in Melbourne on December 13 and Pakistan in Sydney on December 28.

Border will also coach an Australian Under-19 side to tour Pakistan in February.

Current Australian coach Geoff Marsh, who replaced long-serving coach Bob Simpson earlier this year, has no need to keep looking over his shoulder, according to Border.

``Basically, I'm just having a go at a bit of everything,'' said Border, who has an ACB contract. ``I'll have a go and see how I enjoy it.''

Border, who retired from international cricket in 1994 following a world record 156 Tests, a record 93 as captain, and with a world record 11,174 Test runs, is keeping an open mind about his future prospects.

``Just because you've played cricket doesn't mean you'll make a good coach, '' he said. ``It's part of expanding my commitment to the ACB, trying everything and seeing what I most enjoy.''
