SRI LANKA v INDIA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1996

At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, September 5 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by seven wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka.

This match was scheduled for the previous day, when rain delayed the start and then washed out play after four overs. In that time, India were put in and reached 16 without loss (M. Prabhakar 3*, S. R. Tendulkar 11*, l-b 1, w 1), Wickremasinghe conceding nine runs in two overs and Vaas six.

India were unchanged next day; Sri Lanka brought in Chandana for Sanjeeva Ranatunga. The tournament organisers declared that the original match should not stand in limited-overs international records. On the following day, play was further delayed, so that only 25 overs a side were possible. India, in rusty form a month before their home season began, failed to put enough runs together after Wickremasinghe removed both openers. Despite Azharuddin's brilliant run-out of Jayasuriya from point, Sri Lanka were not stretched in making 126. Mahanama's unbeaten fifty anchored the innings and Ranatunga increased the tempo with 41 in 48 balls.

Man of the Match: G. P. Wickremasinghe.
