AUSTRALIA v SOUTH AFRICA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1996

At Lahore, October 12. Australia won by six runs. Toss: Australia.

An opening stand of 98 between Taylor and Slater and then a half-century from Steve Waugh were crucial on a slow pitch. South Africa were already missing Donald and Snell, and another of their quick bowlers, McMillan, bowled three overs for 24. He missed the rest of the competition through injury. Slow starts – here, 15 runs in ten overs – were to be the South Africans' problem throughout the tournament, yet Cronje almost stole the game. He finished only two short of his century, though more crucially South Africa were seven short of the 14 needed from McDermott's final over.

Man of the Match: S. R. Waugh.
