NEW ZEALAND v SRI LANKA Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1996
At East London, December 18. Sri Lanka won by five wickets. Toss: New Zealand. Sri Lanka kept up their belated charge towards the finals with a splendid win. An adventurous 102 by Rutherford, off only 98 balls, set a demanding target. But they responded magnificently. Jayasuriya set the tone with a full-blooded onslaught on Pringle, previously New Zealand's most effective one-day bowler. He made the most of the short boundaries in hitting 52 off 31 balls, and the later batsmen lifted Sri Lanka to victory with nearly three overs to spare. ICC referee Burge fined Rutherford half his match fee for trying to influence the umpire over an appeal against Tillekeratne, and Ranatunga 25 per cent for dissent when given out caught behind. Man of the Match: K. R. Rutherford. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
