NEW ZEALAND v SOUTH AFRICA Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1996
At Christchurch, February 23, 24. New Zealand won by 46 runs. Toss: South Africa. The contest to join Australia in the final was postponed a day, after rain prevented any play on February 23. Greatbatch scored 76 from 85 balls to take his aggregate in the tournament to 182 and looked more assured than Rutherford in a stand of 98. Cairns also hit out until, one ball after a beamer from Matthews, he hit a skimming cover drive, only for Kirsten to dive like a goal-keeper and stop the six with a superb right-handed catch. But Parore attacked successfully and later took a leg-side stumping off a wide to dismiss Cronje after he and Kirsten had reached 117 for two. South Africa offered little more resistance and were bowled out with three overs to spare. Man of the Match: M. J. Greatbatch. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
