The former Warwickshire captain, who has agreed a three-year contract, does not officially take up his duties at Taunton until next March.
But he has already persuaded the club to introduce a financial incentive scheme for players to help put themselves into shape for the 1997 campaign.
Reeve explained: ``Players who reach the required fitness levels when assessments are made before and during next season can benefit by up to #750.
``It's hard work keeping fit during the winter and I have always believed players should be rewarded for doing it properly. I want the Somerset lads reporting back fitter than ever next year and then we shall work on getting them sharper still.
``The other main aim must be to create an environment which encourages every player to perform to his maximum. I would rather be part of a losing side who give 100 per cent than winners who cut corners.''
Asked why he had chosen Somerset, Reeve said: ``I have always had an affinity with their cricket since watching them in a Lord's final during the Botham era. I actually had a trial with Somerset when first coming to England before joining the MCC Young Cricketers and Taunton has always seemed to me a lovely place to play.
``There is a great amount of talent at the club, with Andy Caddick fit again and Mushtaq Ahmed due to return next season. I have never been one to set targets but I am certainly optimistic.''
Among Reeve's first tasks will be to advise on signings and the appointment of a captain to succeed Andy Hayhurst, who has joined Derbyshire since Somerset decided not to renew his contract.
Somerset have appointed Colin Wells, who was released by Derbyshire at the end of last season, as their new second team captain and coach. He said: ``I am looking forward to working with Dermot because he is a proven winner.''
