Glamorgan unveil plan for Sophia Gardens
By Edward Bevan
23 October 1996
GLAMORGAN yesterday unveiled plans to transform Sophia Gardens,
their headquarters at Cardiff, into a National Cricket Ground for
Wales at an estimated cost of =A39 million over a maximum
period of 15 years. The plans, to be introduced in three major
stages, will include a National Cricket Academy, a new pavilion
with club offices and a grandstand.
The club are hoping that the academy will be ready for use at the
start of the 1998 season, while other projects will be completed
as funding becomes available.
Glamorgan have shared the ground since 1966 with Cardiff Athletic Club but recently began a new 125-year lease which
gives them exclusive occupation of the ground from the end of
next season. The county will continue to use other venues at
Swansea, Abergavenny and Colwyn Bay next season, but Swansea
Rugby Club have already said they wish to develop St Helen's
exclusively for rugby.
