India to hold independence anniversary cricket tourney

8 October 1996

NEW DELHI, Monday - India is to host a limited overs tournament next May to mark the 50th anniversary of the country's independence, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials said on Monday.

A senior official said the BCCI was in touch with various countries to invite participation but no details had been worked out yet.

Another official said there was a delay because Pakistan's entry required approval from both India and Pakistan which became independent within one day of each other in 1947 at the end of British rule.

With temperatures soaring in May, matches will mainly be dayand-night, the official said.
