India ranked fifth in Tests, eighth in one-dayers

2 October 1996

India was ranked eighth out of the nine Test playing nations, when The International Cricketer released its latest computerised rankings for the one day game. This is the lowest position India has reached in the rankings, till date.

Interestingly, a year ago going into last winter's one day series against New Zealand at home, India was ranked the top one day side in the world, thanks to its performances at home and in other Asian venues, particularly a 4-1 win over the Windies at home.

In the latest rankings, South Africa surprisingly takes top place, with world champions Sri Lanka coming second.

On the other hand, Australia remains the top ranked Test team, ahead of the West Indies with 12 while Pakistan, thanks to its convincing win over England in the series earlier this year, moves into third place ahead of South Africa and India.

The full rankings, with points in paranthesis, follows:

Tests: Australia (72), West Indies (60), Pakistan (58), South Africa (55), India (50), England (42), Sri Lanka (37), New Zealand (21), Zimbabwe (21).

One day internationals: South Africa (79), Sri Lanka (61), Australia (57), Pakistan (49), England (46), New Zealand (45), West Indies (44), India (40), Zimbabwe (24).
