10 October 1996

Two leading Royal College cricketers, captain Anushka Polonowita and his deputy Yasas Dharmaratne have been rewarded for their outstanding contributions to the school during the past season by being picked to play district cricket in Melbourne for five months.

The pair shared a record partnership of 254 - the best for any wicket in the annual 'Big Match' against S. Thomas' during the 1995-96 season and provided the only occasion of two batsmen scoring centuries in the same innings when Anushka made 164 and Yasas 124. Their liaison also enabled Royal to record the highest total in the series - 386 for 6.

During the season, Polonowita made over 1,000 runs (1,200) with three centuries and took 62 wickets, while his vice-captain made 975 runs with one century and took 36 wickets.

They are sponsored by Raiders Cricket Club, Melbourne president Alan Pereira, an Old Royalist, and the Royal College Businessman's Club.
