Officials of Durham indicated that Boon (35) had signed a twoyear contract, and would arrive in England in April. Durham director Geoff Cook had earlier flown to Australia to clinch the deal.
Boon will take over as skipper of Durham from Mike Roseberry, who resigned last weekend in the wake of Durham's placing last in both the English county championship and the Sunday league. Boon, who is now leading Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield in Australia, is expected to bring his vast experience, and his combative attitudes, to the beleaguered club.
Boon had announced his retirement from international cricket in late 1995, ending an international career spanning 107 Tests, mostly as an opener, in which he had scored 7,422 at an average of 43. The big-scoring Boon, rated throughout the world as one of the most difficult batsmen to dislodge, has 21 Test centuries to his credit.
