South Africa ban logo use on bats

30 September 1996

JOHANNESBURG, Sunday, South Africa have banned their players from carrying commercial sponsors' logos on their bats because it could gain more prominence than the main match sponsors, national cricket chief Ali Bacher said on Saturday.

The decision runs counter to a ruling by the International Cricket Council (ICC) which introduced a rule change in July allowing players to ``rent'' out the top nine inches on the front and the whole of the rear of their bats.

``We feel a bat logo could have a greater impact on a viewer than an event or a team sponsor logo on a shirt. We cannot allow this,'' said Bacher, managing director of the United Cricket Board of South Africa.

Bacher said the UCB had faxed the ICC expressing their concern over the issue.
