Gerry Perera's death - a loss to cricket

THE DEATH on August 18 of Gerry Perera, President, Kurunegala District Cricket Association - an office he held for 15 consecutive years, was received with much sadness by the cricket-loving people of Kurunegala District. He was 60 years at the time of his death.

An old Annite and Old Joe, Gerry Perera was a criminal lawyer for 36 years, he was also a former president of the Kurunegala Sports Club which he revived in 1961 with two colleagues from the Bar, S. L. M. Cassim and W. M. Nandisena. Kurunegala SC became 'Daily News' Trophy Cricket Champions under his presidency.

International matches were played at Kurunegala's Welagedera Stadium featuring England, South Africa, India and Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Gerry Perera developed cricket not only in Kurunegala but in the NWP, particularly in schools.

His funeral took place on August 20 in Kurunegala.
