Cricket promoter Gerry Perera dies

Kurunegala cricket lost one of its ardent promoters of the game in the district with the death of Gerry Perera yesterday.

Perera, a leading and one of the oldest criminal lawyers in Kurunegala, was instrumental in promoting the game in the province. He was closely associated with the late D.B. Welagedara in constructing the Weladedara Stadium.

Perera was president of the Kurunegala District CA since 1983 and during his tenure several international matches were played in Kurunegala. He revived the Kurunegala SC with Procter Nandisena and late S.L.M. Cassim and held the post of secretary in 1963 and president ten years later.

Perera served as a committee member of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board at various intervals.

Educated at St. Anne's College, Kurunegala and St. Joseph's College, Colombo, Perera graduated from Law College and practised in Kurunegala Bar from 1963 to 1997. He was president of the Kurunegala Bar Association.

His funeral takes place today.
