Southerland SC in 22-run win

NEWLY formed Southerland Sports Club, Kadugannawa scored a close 22 run win over Gampola Youths Cricket Club in their Cricket Board's Division III cricket tournament match played at the Kegalle Esplanade recently.

Southerland SC: 189 all out in 38 overs (A. D. Dissnayake 38, L. Waduge 15, U. Weerasinghe 32, W. De Silva 35, M. Ishaak 4 for 39, I Fuard 3 for 54)

Gampola Youths CC: 167 all out in 46.4 overs (M. Ramees 24, M. Shamseer 24, M. Shiraz 21, P. W. Samaraweera 29, M. Ishaak 25, S. Paranavitharne 2 for 20, L. W. De Silva 3 for 22, L. Kaanganarachchi 3 for 29)

NGO will promote Cricket, Netball and VB in Moneragala

A NON-GOVERNMENTAL Organisation devoted to uplift sporting activities within the Moneragala electorate has been formed.

According to its president this body will concentrate only on promoting three events - Cricket, Volleyball and Netball with a view to providing opportunities to produce national level sportsmen and sportswomen.

The first tournament organised by this new NGO is scheduled to be held from December 14 to 16 where valuable prizes will be offered to the winners, to create a solid awareness in the area and encourage the widest possible response to support the program.

According to president of the Moneragala Development Centre W. M. S. Wijeykoon a program to distribute sports material to groups and teams organised by them will be organised early next year.

M. Wijeykoon also revealed that the Deputy Minister of Buddha Sasana Mrs. Sumedha G. Jayasena will allocate a sum of Rs. 75,000 from her decentralised budget funds, while her son Saliya Sumedha the provincial councillor will allocate a sum of Rs. 50,000 from Uva Provincial Council's decentralised budget.

Meanwhile, the Pelwatte Sugar Company is also giving valuable assistance to promote cricket in the area by giving the use of their sports grounds and organising cricket workshops during week-ends and holidays.

Sri Sumangala hold Nalanda to draw

A FIVE wicket stand of 101 runs between Jayanath Sandakan (74) and H. Jayawardena 32 n.o. steered Sri Sumangala to safety when their inter-school cricket encounter ended in a draw at Campbell Place yesterday.

In reply to Nalanda's first innings total of 133 Sri Sumangala were 6 for 23 and 7 for 32 at one stage with medium pacer Niranjan Kumara (5 for 32) doing most of the damage.

The match began at 12.30 pm and the match saving eight wicket stand denied the Nalandians of making much headway. Sandaken's innings contained ten fours and he faced 142 deliveries.

Nalanda 133 and 32 for 2 at stumps. (Danushka Fernando 16 n.o).

Kandy CC win

KANDY CRICKET CLUB scored a five wicket win over Nomads Cricket Club in their Cricket Board's Division I limited over cricket tournament match played at Asgiriya yesterday.

Heavy overnight rain and a wet out field delayed the start till 12.15 p.m. and Nomads made 112 for 9 in 29 overs when rain stopped play. Off spinner Arvinda Ruhunuhewa bowled well to capture 4 for 11.

Rain further reduced the match to 20 overs ad Kandy had to get 78 to win.

Good batting by Upali Kodituwakku (21), Tharaka Jayasekera (24) and Arvinda Ruhunuhewa 21 including two massive sixes helped the Kandy team. With bad light setting in and rain drops falling, Kandy's Indika Beddagama lofted a big six to square leg, losing the ball in the process to bring victory.

Nomads CC 112 for 9 in 29 overs (S. Silva 43, M. Dissanayake 14, A. Ruhunuhewa 4 for 11).

Kandy CC 83 for 5 in 143 overs (T. Jayasekera 24, Upali Kodituwakku 21, Arvinda Ruhunuhewa 21, R. Subhasinghe 2 for 25, C. Mahindaratne 2 for 6).

Old Trinitians win by 18 runs

OLD TRINITIANS Sports Club scored a close 18-run win over Gampola Cricket Club in their Division III cricket tournament match played at Gampola during the week.

FINE bowling by Indika Gunawardena (4 for 15) and Angus Jayasena (4 for 15) helped Old Trinitians Sports Club to score a five-wicket win over Vinco Sports Club, Kandy in their cricket board's division III cricket tournament match played in Kandy yesterday.

Vinco CC 102 all out in 40 overs (M. Shiraj 10, M. Mumthaj 24, M. Thariqshad 35, I. Gunawardena 4 for 15, Angus Jayasena 4 for 15).

Old Trinitians CC 103 for 5 wkts in 31.5 overs (S. Attanayake 14, D. Weeraratne 25, I. D. B. Gunawardena 21 not out, S. P. Fernando 20).

Bloomfield in 73-run win

BLOOMFIELD beat Kalutara PCC by 73 runs in the BCCSL limited over cricket match played at Sara Stadium yesterday. It was an 28 over game. All-rounder Ruwan Kalpage performed well with the bat scoring an unbeaten 34 and capturing 2 for 8 for Bloomfield.

Bloomfield 153 for 6 (P. Dassanayake 36, S. Abeynayake 41, R. Kalpage 34 n.o., D. Gayal 3 for 20, K. Sanjaya 2 for 28).

KPCC 80 for 6 (S. Priyadarshana 28, R. Kalpage 2 for 8, S. Abeynayake 3 for 24).

Sajith Fernando blasts Colts to 7-wkt win

A QUICK fire unbeaten 82 with five sixes and six fours in 82 balls by Sajith Fernando saw Colts register their fourth win by defeating Sebastianites by 7 wickets in their BCCSL limited-over cricket tournament match on the Colts Grounds, Havelock Park yesterday with 15.1 overs remaining.

Sebastianites who made 170 for 8 in 45 overs were helped to a great extent by the 49-run partnership for the unbroken ninth wicket by Manoj Perera (17) and Chamara Liyanage (30).

Colts in reply knocked up the required runs in 29.5 overs and were 172 for 3.

CATAMARANS SC registered a comfortable 8 wickets win over Moratuwa SC in their division three cricket match played at Tyronne Fernando Stadium, Moratuwa yesterday.
