SL women enter q-finals

The Sri Lanka ladies cricket team reached the quarterfinals of the women's World Cup cricket tournament which is now in progress in India. They booked their place in the last eight by defeating the West Indies by six wickets in a crucial encounter played yesterday.

The West Indies were dismissed for 79 runs in 30 overs with Thilaka Gunaratne (4 for 8) and Rasanjalee de Silva (2 for 15) causing the damage.

In reply Sri Lanka scored 82 for 4 in 26 overs thanks to a 46 run stand between Vasanthi Ratanayake (26) and Hiranthi Fernando (28).

Sanken Lanka - two wins in Merc. H cricket

Sanken Lanka Limited recorded two good victories over CBA and ABN Amro Bank in the Mercantile 'H' Division cricket tournament which is now in progress at the MCA grounds.

They beat CBA by 82 runs in a low scoring encounter played recently. They were restricted to 122 runs in 26 overs but hit back strongly and dismissed the opposition for just 40 runs in 22 overs.

In their next outing Sanken Lanka Limited scored an exciting eight run win over ABN Amro Bank. They were defending only a total of 71 runs but yet did well to restrict the opposition for 63 for 9.

Colombo Dockyard also registered two impressive victories over Unilevers and Upali Group respectively. In the game against Unilevers they bowled out the opposition for 79 runs in 22.2 overs and then reached the target in 19.3 overs.

Colombo Dockyard also defeated Upali Group by 22 runs in another match played at MCA grounds recently. They scored 135 for 8 in 25 overs and then dismissed the opposition for 113 runs. However Upali Group had the satisfaction of defeating Unilevers by 45 runs in another encounter. The winners scored 102 runs in 20.5 overs and bowled out the opposition for 57 runs.

MJF Group also had two wins to their credit over Hong Kong Bank and Colombo Dockyard respectively. In addition Supreme Washing beat Habib Bank by ten runs and NDB by 37 runs respectively. Habib Bank however scored a 30 run win over East West Information while Standard Chartered Bank outplayed International Distilleries by ten wickets.

In another fixture Seylan Bank 'C' edged out Celltel Lanka Limited by a solitary run while Airport Garden Hotel beat Aitken Spence 'B' by 36 runs. In addition ACL Cables beat Burns and Philip by 53 runs while Reckitt and Colman defeated LOLC by one wicket.
