Essex had no inkling before a Sunday newspaper exclusive that the veteran batsman intended to terminate his first-class career this week after 24 seasons at the club. Gooch announced his retirement plans without telling the county's secretary, coaching director or cricket chairman. Peter Edwards, Essex's secretary, said: ``I knew nothing about it until 11.30pm on Saturday night, when I received a call from a journalist asking if it was true. I even denied it.

``I've got no criticism of the way he announced it, because he has always done things in his own way,'' Edwards added. ``He has been tremendously loyal to Essex and is absolutely dedicated to his profession, an absolute role model.''

The former England batsman's last game promises to be an emotional four days for his adoring supporters at New Writtle Street, and Gooch himself would love to reel off a farewell hundred, especially today, on his 44th birthday.

Edwards was among the crowd at Perth two years ago, when it was known Gooch was playing his final Test for England.

He said: ``The Australians gathered round and gave three cheers, and there were tears in the eye, which probably made sure he got out for one run. Perhaps Worcestershire will try something similar at Chelmsford - I don't know.''

It is probable a suitable presentation will be made to Gooch on the club's reunion day at Chelmsford on Aug 31, when Warwickshire are the visitors for a Sunday League match.
