Yorkshire members warned over vote

6 March 1997

YORKSHIRE have been warned of the consequences if they go ahead with plans to vote on a proposal to establish a new ground near Wakefield at their annual meeting on Saturday.

The warning was issued by Paul Caddick, chairman of Leeds Cricket, Football and Athletic Club, who own the county club's Headingley headquarters.

``There can be no winners whatever the outcome. We will all be losers,'' he told a gathering of 150 concerned members on Tuesday. ``I have asked Chris Hassell, the club's chief executive, to take that resolution off the agenda and enter into talks concerning what is possible at Headingley.

``I am convinced that Yorkshire members will vote to leave Headingley and in that case they will break their lease agreement with my company. The solution to the argument is for Yorkshire to join me in pursuing the #30 million development of Headingley.

``If the county fail to support the development package at Headingley, we will be in dispute and the whole issue will have to go over to the lawyers with a court action possibly lasting five years.''

Amanda Spalding, 39, a chartered accountant, has become the first woman in Nottinghamshire's history to be elected to the club's general committee.
