MUSHTAQ Mohammad, Pakistan's coach, said yesterday he would resign after the four-nation Independence Cup in India because he was not being paid enough.

``This is my last assignment,'' Mushtaq said about his decision to terminate a three-year contract after a year. ``After all, $1,000 (£630) a month is not very attractive money.''

The Birmingham-based Mushtaq, one of four brothers to have represented Pakistan and a former Test captain, said he will return to England after the tournament to pursue other interests.

``I am satisfied with my work over the past year because Pakistan have done very well,'' he said. ``But you also need money to support your family and yourself.''

Mushtaq's announcement came a day after his depleted team beat Sri Lanka, the world champions, by 30 runs to stay in the tournament being organised to celebrate 50 years of India's independence.

Pakistan sources said there were three contenders for Mushtaq's job, the former captain Zaheer Abbas, left-arm spinner Iqbal Qasim and current manager Nasim-ul Ghani.
