Army encourages Jaffna youth to play cricket

THE Army in Jaffna has taken steps to help Tamil youth in Jaffna to take up to the internationally reputed game of cricket.

A turf is considered the main requirement to play cricket and the Army in Jaffna under the directions of the commander 512 Brigade Brigadier Susantha Mendis has undertaken to put up a turf at the University Grounds.

Erection of the turf has been planned by a team headed by the Director, Physical Education at the Colombo University N. A. Dassanayake who visited Jaffna recently. Necessary grass seeds have been brought from Nuwara Eliya and allowed to grow in a nursery in Jaffna.

The turf is expected to be completed by March 1998 and the cricket pitch is expected to be opened in April. The entire expenditure will be borne by the Army.

Lanka Cavalliers on winning streak

LANKAN CAVALLIERS made it four-in-a-row when they beat Badulla President's over-40 XI on faster run rate in an exhibition limited over cricket encounter played at the Badulla Esplanade.

Uva Provincial Council Chief Minister Percy Samaraweera was the chief guest and was introduced to the two teams and the match officials.

Lankan Cavalliers have so far played four outstation matches and had won all. Three half centuries by C. P. P. Raj, K. H. Nandasena and Daya Sirisena enabled Lankan Cavalliers to score 249 runs in 30 overs losing 8 wickets. Openers C. P. P. Raj (50) and K. H. Nandasena (54) put on 112 runs for the first wicket partnership.

When rain intervened, Badulla President's Eleven were 96 for 6 in 23 overs. Ajith Jayasinghe top scored with 22 runs ably assisted by N. Pala Wijesekera (21). Ajith Jayasinghe also captured 2 wickets for 13 runs inclusive the wicket of skipper Bandula Warnapura who scored a valuable 39 runs.

Old Uvites beat Cosmo SC by 4 wkts

OLD UVITES took a further step towards the semi-finals of the Badulla League limited over cricket tournament when they scored an upset win over Cosmo Sports Club, Bandarawela by 4 wickets in the game played at the Badulla Esplanade.

first, Cosmo SC were all out for 108 runs with A. Priyanga capturing 5 wickets for 20 runs. In reply, Old Uvites SC scored the required runs in 20 overs losing 6 wickets. T. Subasinghe scored a superb half century.

Two centuries in drawn match

TWO centuries was the highlight of the inter-school cricket match between Sri Rahula College, Katugastota and Kegalu Maha Vidyalaya which ended in a draw at Peradeniya yesterday.

First it was Sri Rahula skipper Nalaka Ratnayake who hit up superb 117 not out with 17 fours and a six. It was a stroke-filled knock which had a stamp of class.

When the Kegalle School batted P. Padmaperuma knocked up a quick 12 with 8 fours and two sixes.

Sri Rahula College 251 for 7 decl in 61.4 overs (Nalaka Ratnayaka 117 n.o., C. Wijeratne 65, S. Bandara 28, P. Padmaperuma 3 for 40).

Kegalu MV 226 for 9 in 83 overs (A. Jayaratne 22, G. Perera 43, P. Padmaperuma 112, N. Peiris 2 for 28, R. Rantillake 2 for 28).

Rain - a spoiler

Rain put paid to what could have been a close finish in the Cricket Board's Division I limited over cricket match between BRC and Kalutara TC at BRC grounds yesterday. BRC made 163 in 46.2 overs, but Kalutara TC could not bat due to rain and the umpires called off play at 4.10 p.m.

Sunethra Kumara was the top scorer for BRC with 57 and put on 55 valuable runs for the seventh wicket with Surath Liyanage (23).

Rain saves Maliyadeva

ONLY 30 minutes of play was possible due to wet pitch and soggy ground conditions in the school cricket encounter between Nalanda and Maliyadeva played at Campbell Place yesterday. The match was drawn.

The match commenced at 2.05 p.m. with Nalanda declaring at their overnight total of 159 for 3. Maliyadeva who were shot out for a paltry 46 runs were 8 for 1 when the match was stopped at 2.30 p.m. due to rain.

Maliyadeva: 46 and 8 for 1.

Nalanda: 159 for 3 declared.

Kelum, Hashantha take Cambrians to 249/8

TWO good innings by Kelum Fernando (92) and Hashantha Fernando (69) helped Prince of Wales to reach 249 for 8 declared on the first day of their inter-school cricket encounter against Sri Jayewardenapura MV at Moratuwa yesterday.

The visitors in reply were 117 for 4 at close.

Prince of Wales: 249 for 8 declared (Kelum Fernando 92, Hashantha Fernando 69, Chirantha Sampath 32, D. Idroos 3 for 45).

Sri Jayewardenapura MV: 117 for 4 at close (Warna Silva 50, Thushara Silva 2 for 22).

Ananda u-13 teams in final rounds

BOTH under-13 cricket teams of Ananda qualified to play in the final rounds after defeating Royal in the matches played at Ananda Mawatha and Reid Avenue over the week-end.

In the under-13 division two, Ananda beat Royal by 8 wickets. While Ananda under-13 division three side beat Royal by 82 runs.

Royal: 119 (M. Zarook 42, M. Morawaka 18, S. Abeysekera 15, N. Malaka 2 for 56, T. Mahanthanthila 4 for 44).

BRIGHTON SC beat Old Cambrians by 6 wickets in a division three cricket encounter at the Moratuwa Stadium yesterday.

Old Cambrians SC: 115 off 35 overs (N. Silva 24, Chitral Mendis 17, N. Chaminda 2 for 17).

Brighton SC: 116 for 4 off 29.5 overs (A. Rajaratnam 35, N. Chaminda 39 n.o.)
