Salmond, who was Scotland's most successful batsman in the Trophy, went on to record 633 runs in 18 innings for his country during 1997.

Ian Beven, who was also a key player during the ICC campaign in Malaysia, was named bowler of the year. Alec Davies took the wicketkeeping award.

All three players were also instrumental in guiding their club, Grange, to a memorable League and Cup double, a feat which earned the long-established Edinburgh side the title of Famous Grouse team of the year.

Stoneywood Dyce's Andy Bee, who scored 695 runs and took 53 wickets in the Aberdeen club's successful defence of their Strathmore Union title and, after a play-off, a place in the second division of the Scottish League, received the all-rounder of the year award, while Dunfermline's Ross Mitchison was given a special award in recognition of his excellent performances for the Scottish Under-19 side which also won a place in the Junior World Cup. Drew Parsons (Prestwick) was named the Under-23 player of the year.

Last night's awards were presented by Andrew Litster, the UK finance manager for Famous Grouse.
