Hong Kong Sixes: Hooper takes strike action

CARL HOOPER, who is due to rejoin Kent as their overseas player next month, is to be reported to the West Indies authorities for refusing to take the field in last weekend's Hong Kong Sixes.

Hooper stayed at the luxury Excelsior Hotel, all expenses paid, and took his flight back to the West Indies yesterday without appearing in the Cathay Pacific-sponsored tournament.

All players were paid by contract through their domestic boards, in accordance with International Cricket Council regulations.

Brian Catton, tournament chairman, said: ``Hooper's behaviour was disgraceful. He more or less said 'no pay, no play', which was nothing to do with us because his fees were to be paid by the West Indies board. He made several other demands which we declined to meet. Basically he was taking his financial dissatisfaction out on us.''

Catton praised the ``enlightened'' approach by the England and Wales Cricket Board and was impressed by the conduct of England's squad, led by Adam Hollioake.

Players to catch the eye here were Wasim Akram, Naeem Ashraf, his Pakistan colleague, Mark Waugh, Nixon McLean, the Windward Islands fast bowler, and Matthew Fleming.
