Warne is out of the frame

LANCASHIRE are OUT of the running to sign Shane Warne.

Last night's crunch committee meeting made no final decision on whether to register Wasim Akram for next season.

But the committee did decide to give Wasim more time to prove his fitness, after he returned to action in the nets yesterday.

And with Warne already promising to make his decision within the next fortnight, Lancashire have effectively conceded that the leg spin ace will not be coming to Old Trafford next year.

The committee also deferred any decision on finding a new chairman and chief executive, while they will wait until the end of the season before considering the captaincy.

Treasurer Derek Peaker confirmed his wish to leave six months before he was due to retire at the next AGM in February.

While the second day of the championship match against Essex was a complete washout and today's start was delayed due to a wet outfield, the second team enjoyed another good day at Worcester.

Lancashire, who are second in the table, 33 points behind Yorkshire with two games in hand, reduced Worcestershire to 214-8 on a rain affected first day, with Glen Chapple taking 4-29.

Lancashire have boosted their bid to win the second team championship for the first time since 1986, and to take some silverware from an otherwise miserable season, by including contract rebel Jason Gallian alongside fellow England A tourist Chapple.

Gallian also took a wicket yesterday in a good performance by the Lancashire seamers.
